Doctors in Germany have determined that John Demjanjuk, a retired autoworker accused of being an Nazi extermination camp guard, is fit to stand trial, Munich prosecutors said Friday. Mr. Demjanjuk, 89, is accused of being an accessory in the murder of 29,000 Jews while working as a guard at the Sobibor death camp in Nazi-occupied eastern Poland. He was extradited from his home in Seven Hills, Ohio, to Germany in May and is likely to appear before the court this fall. Mr. Demjanjuk and his family have contended that bone marrow and kidney diseases rendered him too ill for trial. But doctors said that he is capable of two 90-minute sessions a day, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. Mr. Demjanjuk was previously convicted and sentenced to death in Israel in 1988 after Holocaust survivors identified him as an infamously cruel guard at the Treblinka death camp, only to have the conviction overturned five years later because of conflicting evidence.
